The lab was very quiet as I slipped the vial out of it’s air tight chamber. I hold it gently, fearing my hands might crack the small vial. I take it, hand shaking slightly as I place it into a metal case. I seal it tightly and start to close off the air tight chamber when I hear a voice behind me.
“Doctor Nikola? What are you doing with that vial of RK1?”
I whip my hand around. CRAP! It’s a guard… I open my mouth quickly, trying to think of a explanation.
“It’s not RK1. It’s a control for the testing of rats with RK1.”
“And I am the king of England. I just watched you take that from the RK1 filtered vial.”
I turn around and grab the metal case. “Excuse me sir, I need to get home.”
The guard moves to stop me and block my path.
“If you don’t move, I will have to kill you.” I say quietly. I move my hand around a bottle of hydrochloric acid that is sitting nearby. A smile runs across his face as I see his fists curl up into tight balls. I quickly raise the bottle and smash it against his head. I then jump back and kick him in the chest, knocking him into a plate of precision knifes. His face begins to melt away under the hydrochloric acid. His screams of pain are loud and piecing.
I check the vial. All good, was not broken during the process. But that’s when I heard a slight hissing sound. I look around and find that a few of the precision knifes had severed the air line. CRAP! That’s the air tight line. Now its spilling out into the air…
No time to try to cover it up. I made quite the noise, and it’s not like RK1 had ever gone airborne. Why should it now?
I place my thumb on the small pad that reads fingerprints and ONLY lets the authorized people through. I hear it working on reading my fingerprint. Then a click, and a female, soft voice saying “See you tomorrow Dr. Nikola.”
Running through the semi empty hallways, passing everyone that was entering the government lab. I then hear some yelling and I see people in security clothing running after me. I turn and take a short cut out of the emergency door.
I find my self on the loading deck. I see one truck vacant, but still running with three solders searching it’s contents.
I dive into the cab of the white box truck and start to pull off. I hear a yell and the door falling shut. “STOP THAT TRUCK!” screamed a security officer. I hear gun shots galore pinging on the truck, tearing through it like butter.
Then it stopped. I look out my side mirrors to find that everyone following me and shooting at me have fallen down. And I don’t see any of them breathing.
RK1 went airborne… But I am not dead… I turn it over in my head for a few minutes as I drive through the empty roads of the fort. No one was to be seen. They are all dead and its all your fault.
I push it from my head and just keep driving right out of the fort. I pull out on to the road and ride down 2 blocks to the local community college, FCC.
And there they will have Mary.
One hour earlier
“KAREN! PHONE!” my roommate, Caitlyn, screams. “IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR FAAAAVORITE TEACHER!” Caitlyn teases sarcastically. I run down from my bedroom. I take the phone from her hand, sticking my tongue out sarcastically.
“Helllllllllllloooooooo…?” I ask “This is Kar-”
“Karen, its your professor, I am about to get a special sample of a strain of a new disease and I need a assistant to help me analyze its capabilities. Could you get to the lab in about a hour?”
“Wait… A new disease? Hour? Assistant?” Caitlyn has both her thumbs up and is mouthing the words ‘Young and hot’
“Yes Karen. I know this will look very good on your applications to Fort Detrick…”
“I will be there in a hour then.”
“I got to get ready.” I said. I then ran upstairs and began rummaging through my shirts. I find a Led Zeppelin tee and a pair of blue jeans. I throw them on quickly.
“Can you give me a ride Cait?” I ask as I pick up my purse and check the can of mace. I still hadn’t made enough to get a crappy used car, but Caitlyn got her nice little 2006 Mustang for her sweet 16 present from her ‘rents.
I heard a mega sigh from the hallway where she is placing her lunch into her large handbag. “Fine… I will take you to community college TWO hours early so you can hang out with your effing FAVORITE teacher to break down a tiny strain of some mysterious disease that will infect a total of THREE freaking people… Let me just call Christopher up to drag his monkey crew with him over…”
I shake my head. That was the one bad part of having Cait for a roommate. Her looooooong speeches. But on the bright side, I get to see steamy Lance Davis. “Call your boy toy up quick. I got to go ASAP.”
“I got you girl.”
I stare at my small selection of shoes and chose the simple sneaker pair, other wise I will end up with those crappy ones that he picks up from Goodwill or something like that are lab appropriate, but disgusting as freak.
I slip on the pink and white muddy sneakers and listen to Caitlyn talking to her boyfriend Christopher Peak.
“I know it’s early… But she won’t get there any other way… And this is really important… Not to me… To her. Just be there or else we are over.” I hear the phone shut. “Ready?”
“Always.” I yell back, stepping towards the door.
“Let’s get you to Dr. McSteamy and his potentially fatal disease.”
The parking lot of the FCC building C was empty. No one was in sight but a single blue car with steamed up windows that I knew as my Professors car.
Cait pulls the car up to the side of the building and I motion for her to follow me in. “I don’t know if he is planning on raping me. I need back up.”
Cait pulls off her legendary epic sigh. “I wouldn’t do this if I wasn’t your best friend.” she says as she turns off the car and takes a step inside.
All the sounds suddenly was replaced by the screeching of tires. Both of us turned around to find a white box truck labeled “Gourmet Foods” on the side came hurling at the building. It hit’s the Mustang and both Caitlyn and I jump backwards, so as to protect ourselves. I hear the door to the box truck groan open and out came a jet black haired, pale 27 year old hop out and run inside Building C. Caitlyn and I stared at each other in amazement and pure confusion as to what the crap had just happened.
“Umm…. You have insurance, right?” I ask her.
“Yea… I better go inside and get his insurance info. That bastards lucky he didn’t hit either of us, otherwise I would own him down to his underpants.” Caitlyn said. You could tell she was shaken up. She turns and starts to walk inside Building C. I follow her into the fancy, state of the art Science and Technology Hall.
