Life in the southwest is not an easy one for the unadapted. The summers are hot and grueling, the rain doesn't come often enough and when it does come it's torrential, the winters are unexpectedly cold. But it's a place of beauty, an enchanted part of the country that Clara is proud to be from. Although she was born in New Mexico, she grew up in Arizona. Her mother was a history teacher in junior high, her father the manager of a manufacturing plant. Clara was born three weeks early while they were on vacation, and had to remain in the hospital for several days until her lung function was normal. Due to being born premature, she did have some learning disabilities.
During her early years, her mother pushed her in school, trying to make her keep up at a normal pace with the other children. Clara barely eeked by in her classes, but found a real love for physical activities. She participated in track and swimming, excelling at swim meets and winning several medals with her team. She came dangerously close to being kicked off the teams due to low grades, but her mother always helped her get them just enough to keep her involved.
Clara was a popular girl and attended many parties, reveling in underage drinking and smoking pot with her friends. It was at a friend's party that she met Lance, a cute boy from another high school in town. They hung out most of the night, giggling over mundane crap. At the end of the night they exchanged numbers. They went on a couple of dates, hung out and teased each other at track and swim events, but they both knew there was no real spark between them. They had fun when they were together, but there was no relationship between them.
She had a few boyfriends throughout high school, but none of them ever stayed around long, and she was never very worried about that. When Lance was going through the difficulty of losing his mother, she hooked up with him a few times to help his emotional healing. They started drifting apart after her death, and lost touch until Lance contacted her about an end of the year trip. She agreed to join them and enjoyed herself immensely, catching up on the years they hadn't seen each other. After that trip, they didn't speak for two more years.
After high school, Clara didn't have any plans for her life. She was interested in kinesiology, but she knew she did not have the intelligence to get a degree in it, or anything else. Her parents, upset with her decision, made a deal with her: if she would at least attend college and do her best, they would pay for her to have a place to life, get her a car, pay her tuition, and get her any tutors she needed. Unsure of herself, she agreed to their proposal and enrolled in Arizona State University, moving into a small apartment off campus, and picking out a vehicle.
Her first year in college was a life changing experience for Clara. She came dangerously close to failing her classes, focusing more on partying than studying, but with the help of tutors she was able to squeak by with D's in all of her classes, except the B she earned in her physical activity course. She did marginally better her second semester, learning how to balance the frat parties with the studying, earning a smattering of C's and D's. Her parents were understandably unhappy with her grades, even though they tried to by understanding with her learning disability, but that did not dissuade them from pushing her into the pre-med program.
She had to bring her grades up in order to be considered as a candidate for the program, so her third and fourth semesters she shed most of her partying, buckled down with her tutors, and poured her time into studying, memorizing, and practicing, bringing her grades up to solid B's and high C's. Her GPA was on the low end of what was acceptable in the pre-med course, but she was able to start taking the first group of classes.
Within the program, Clara began to falter. The course material was above her understanding of science, she sat through most classes just staring off into space, trying to pay attention, trying to focus her thoughts, but she knew she would not understand and found it difficult to even pretend. When she tried to talk to her parents, they both told her she just needed to try harder, to believe in herself, and she could do anything; she left upset with them for not listening to her and not understanding the reality of her struggles. She did try – but by mid-terms she was failing two of her classes and was advised to drop them. At that point she decided that she would rather be enjoying herself than reading over dry medical books, so she pushed them to the side of her desk and returned to the frat parties.
At one of parties she met a guy she'd come to know during her first two semesters, a drug dealer named Jason, aka “Jugglin' Jace”, she'd made deals with. He was eager for her to return to his customer base, and after several weeks of bumping into each other at parties they decided to take their relationship to the next level. She's not in love with him, by any means, but she is excited by the draw of a free supply of pills or pot or whatever he happens to have on him. He's physically abusive, nothing more than a few slaps, pushing her around, hard pinches that leave bruises, but so far she's willing to deal with his crap as long as he keeps her in a happy place where she can forget about her troubles.
She hangs around with his friends, a bunch of junkies who push his products for him, and she's starting to sink into the life style. She even died her hair black, she wears her make-up heavier in an attempt to hide her paleness and remain looking 'normal', changed her behaviors and dress style. At one of the parties she was hanging on his arm, her mind a muddled mess of incoherent snippets of ideas while he talked to someone about purchasing some pills. She recognized the voice and smiled at him, but Lance did not recognize her, not the way she way now. She had lost the lean muscles her athletic days built, she was thinner now, her hair darker, but once she introduced herself he knew her again. They hung out a few times, just quick lunches or coffee breaks, nothing serious. They laughed and caught up, then parted ways again.
A few weeks later, with finals pressing
on her along with the knowledge that she would be kicked out of the
pre-med program when they were over, Clara received a text message
inviting her on a camping trip with Lance and his friends. She
accepted, needing something to get her mind off the failure awaiting

Other Physical Characteristics:
She has a tattoo of a skeletal woman wearing a Victorian dress on her mid-spine. The woman is holding a large bouquet made of red roses, white poppies, and violets.
She also has a small heart on her left
shoulder blade, about the size of a quarter.
She used to be a t-shirt and jeans, girl next door type, but lately she has gotten into wearing cheap, skin tight dresses and fishnets, anything that gets attention.
For the camping trip, she is wearing
dark denim rolled up shorts, a red tank top with a short sleeved
black button up blouse, black socks, and black hiking boots. Her
hair is tied back in a low pony tail that spills in messy waves down
her back, the long bangs swept to the side.
Personality: She used to be a fun-loving, laid back girl, but lately Clara is often moody and brooding. She is withdrawn from others, worried about how she's going to deal with her parents and what she's going to do about school. She has too much on her shoulders, and the pressure is starting to wear her down.
