Name: Joss Considine
Birthplace: Philadelphia, PA
Joss was born as an only child in a middle class family, his father a factory worker, his mother a part time waitress at a coffee shop. His upbringing and child hood was pretty normal even though he was a bit of a latch/key kid. He went to school, got pretty good grades, played high school football, had a high school sweetheart, and lived in a one story three room house in the suburbs all his life. Joss had always wanted to be a doctor, but his family didn’t have the money to send him to medical school, and his grades were average, not terrible, but not enough to get him a scholarship to a prestigious medical school. At age seventeen, he graduated early, having earned extra credits by taking some college courses during the summer and a part time job. He joined U.S. Army on a 4 year G.I. Bill, despite his mother’s reservations, and his girlfriend’s, Katy, disapproval. During his years of service, he trained as a 68Whiskey, a military EMT. After his basic training, he served in Germany and continued his ‘Combat Lifesaver’ schooling, but was never sent to Iraq or Afghanistan, or seen actual combat, like most in his unit. Letters from Katy got less and less, and by the time he was stationed in Germany, only a year into his service, non existent.
After his 3rd year of active service, Joss’ father died of a heart attack. He decided not to re-up on his contract with the military on his 4th year of service and returned to the states. When he returned home, he found his mother had been dating and had gotten into a serious relationship with another man, and this irritated him. Jose loved his mother, but disapproved of the fact that she had moved on so fast. Rationally, he knew that his mom had every right to be happy, but the emotional part of him missed his father and felt that she was betraying him. They talked, there was never any kind of explosion or hate filled speech, Joss just stopped visiting, and calls became far and few in between. Katy, his high school sweetheart, had moved on with her life. She had went to college while he was in Germany, and eventually met the man she had married only months before he got out of the Army. His old friends had moved, gone to college, gotten married or gotten jobs; it seemed as if the world moved on without him. Realizing he had nothing left in Philadelphia, Joss decided to strike out on his own, moving to a mid size city in the Mid-West.
Joss easily got a job as a first level EMR at the St. Jude Regional Medical Center. He worked the graveyard shift for almost two years, promoting from EMR to an EMT while going to medical school in the mornings after his shift and sleeping in the afternoons. With his studies and job, he never really had a chance to meet friends, or to go out. Sure, once in a while he would be invited to a party or two, or a bar for drink by a co-worker, or one of the other students in college, but it was rare that he would go. His job as an EMT was intense, and he found himself becoming tired and depressed if he wasn’t studying or working, sitting alone in his apartment. He often took extra shifts on the weekend just to avoid attempting to have a social life or having to deal with the loneliness. There would be time for socializing after his studies, maybe this summer, his second summer there. He thought there would always be time afterwards, that there will always be a tomorrow. That was, until the dead began to rise.
Character Personality: Joss is a humanitarian, willing to help anyone at any given time and when it is needed, and that is one of the reasons he went into the medical field. While not shy, he’s not boisterous either. He is very reserved and keeps his emotions in check, especially in times of stress, which is one of the reasons he is so good at his job. He is more of a follower than a leader.
Strengths: Physically fit (for his work as an EMT), trained to administer a variety of emergency medical procedures, has schooling and practical knowledge of general medical treatments, steady hands, good hand-eye coordination, reaction time, and eyesight.
Weaknesses: Though Joss went through Basic Training, he skated past his hand to hand combat training. He has never been in a fight, so it’s doubtful he is any good at hand to hand combat. Despite good eyesight and hand-eye coordination, Joss isn't comfortable with firearms. He barely qualified with his weapon in basic, and as a medic, he only had to shoot once a year to qualify. If not involved in tasks and when left on his own, Jose has a habit of becoming severally depressed and will withdraw from those people around him.
